About the course

This is a one-day online simulation course which focuses on clinical decision making. It is designed for psychiatry trainees (core trainees and higher trainees of any sub-speciality), as well as other junior doctors such as foundation doctors, and other mental health professionals, particularly those working within a liaison or crisis setting.

This is a highly interactive small group training where attendees will participate in short simulated scenarios, interacting live with our simulated patients. Each simulated scenario is followed by a group debrief led by our experienced facilitators.

The scenarios introduce different patients who present to services in a crisis, and the group are asked to vote on whether they would admit the patient or offer community treatment. The second part of the scenario will vary according to the majority decision make in part one.

Learning objectives

After attending this course, you will have a better understanding of:

  • The structure of acute pathways within mental health services
  • The views which occur across different teams from liaison psychiatry assessment services to in-patient and community services about the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing a mental health admission.
  • The steps required to make a sound clinical decision to admit or discharge the patient, and the consequences of such decisions on patients, their families and other teams across the pathway.
